Wintering Hummingbirds
December 2002
back to winter season 02-03
In December I had several different hummingbirds visit my feeders. I try to take photos so that I can check how many different hummers have been here, as I send sightings in to the Texas Parks & Wildife Hummingbird Roundup every year.

In mid-December a very scruffy looking hummer arrived - it's gorget and upper breast feathers appeared very strange, either blowing up in a fluffy manner in the breeze, or giving the bird's throat a strange shape, as if it had been injured. I was not sure of the ID on this bird, but it is probably a juvenile Rufous. See the 6 photos below which illustrate the strange phenomena.
