on the Regal Princess

In January 2004 we took a 15 day cruise on the Regal Princess, beginning in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and ending in Los Angeles, California. We had stops in Jamaica, Aruba, Costa Rica and Huatulco (Santa Cruz), Acapulco, and Cabo San Lucas in Mexico.  We were not able to get off the ship during the transit of the Panama Canal itself, but there was plenty of opportunity to bird from the decks or our cabin balcony, during the day long transit.

As birders we never go anywhere without binoculars and cameras - always hoping to find the next lifer. We're also interested in other aspects of the natural history of an area, so while at sea and at every port of call, we tried to see as much as we could. Sometimes we took a Princess tour, but we also found that hiring a taxi for the day and doing our own thing was often more successful. In some places, we just explored the areas accessible from the cruise terminal, by walking.

Below are the links to the individual reports for each of our stops: A text only page has been added if you wish to make a print out, or for quicker loading if you have a dial-up modum, although the photographs are low resolution to load faster. When printing, set your left and right margins to 0.25 ins, for the best results.

We used 3 digital cameras on the trip:
1) Our trusty 3 year old Olympus C700UZ, which is only a 2.1 megapixel camera, but is good for landscapes and quick shots at      the 10x optical zoom, for identification purposes.
2) A Nikon Coolpix 4500 - a 4 megapixel camera used for digiscoping, landscapes and macro photography.
3) A Canon EOS Digital Rebel (300D) - a 6.3 megapixel DSLR, using a 70-300mm zoom telephoto lens for bird photography.

We also took a laptop computer so that we had somewhere to view and download the images every evening.
